Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Women's political participation is crucial for the development of a democratic society, and the Nigerian Constitution offers provisions aimed at promoting gender equality, particularly in political participation. Section 42 of the Nigerian Constitution prohibits discrimination based on gender, ensuring that women have the right to participate in political processes, including voting and holding public office (Garba & Aliyu, 2023). However, despite these legal protections, women’s political participation in many parts of Nigeria, including Kano Municipal LGA, remains low due to socio-cultural, economic, and political barriers (Mohammed & Usman, 2024). This study examines the impact of constitutional law on women's political participation in Kano Municipal, assessing the extent to which constitutional provisions have influenced the political involvement of women and identifying challenges that hinder their participation.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although the Nigerian Constitution guarantees gender equality in political participation, women in Kano Municipal LGA still face significant challenges in fully participating in political processes. This study aims to investigate the influence of constitutional law on women's political participation in Kano Municipal, considering both the legal framework and the societal barriers that limit women’s engagement in politics.
